Tableaus

Lisi Estaras, Serge Aimé Coulibaly, Alois Reinhardt and Sara Vanderieck met whilst working together in Alain Platel’s les ballets C de la B. Every movement that traverses the body includes its opposite. Every energy coexists with at least a second one. This procedure brings the body and mind in a certain state where intuition and urgency take over. Vanderieck has developed a personal way to support the artistic process as a dramaturg-outside eye. Patience and an extreme openness are at the centre of this method. Artwork and a stage/public performance is the perfect medium to communicate a combination of things/feelings/thoughts/characters that are not compatible in the outside day to day world. The search for that combination of incompatible layers to communicate the true essence of the artist’s research is the centre of what Vanderieck supports during the creation.

The mutual interest in each other’s practice has led to the desire to meet each other in a collaborative creation.

Working in successive research laboratories they will collaborate with different artists from other disciplines and create a series of separate ‘tableaus’ inspired by the novel and their personal relation to today’s world.

The research will take place on the verge of the abstract and the concrete, of the private and the public, of fiction and reality. The final stage performance will be adaptable in many ways. Each performance will have an invited third artist on stage with Estaras and Coulibaly. There will be a different playlist of (some of) the tableaus depending on the artistic urge of the day and the concrete environment and audience. The performance will be staged in different settings from small rooms to public spaces to theatre venues.

Even if they have been developing different artistic practices during their careers, there is also a strong common ground in the work of Lisi Estaras, Alois Reinhardt, Serge Aimé Coulibaly and Sara Vanderieck. The search for a chorographical language that allows all dualities and energies to coexist in one body and in one theatrical world implies a strong connection with the here and now. This work doesn’t allow escapes into a most personal, private, closed state of mind. The personal and the private can only exist inside and throughout the communication.

Based on this common ground and the true desire to co-create a live performance that is as much in the here and now as possible, Coulibaly, Reinhardt, Estaras and Vanderieck started a first research laboratory in August.
